Problem
Arc is no longer being actively developed, and I wanted its sidebar, spaces and Library in a browser that still is.
What I built
Features and fixes across the app, from the TypeScript interface to Swift native modules, following the project's issue-first process.
Result
Two pull requests merged into Ardia and shipped in 0.2.41-nightly.2 and nightly.3; nine more under review.
Ardia is an open-source browser for macOS with Arc's sidebar and Dia's polish, built on Chromium. I switched to it from Arc, then started building what I missed and sending it upstream.
What went into it
- Two pull requests merged and shipped in Ardia's nightly releases, credited in the release notes.
- Nine more under review: a downloads manager, a pinch-to-open tab overview, an Arc-style Library, a theme editor, a new tab page and private-window indicators.
- Every change with tests and a recorded demo, and every automated review comment answered.
How I thought about it
Contributing to someone else's codebase starts with reading it: their style, their tests and their rules (issue first, a demo with every change, no comments in the code) before writing a line.
